How a backyard builder from Melbourne created the most advanced electric skateboard ever made.
Where It Started
An addiction to the feeling
It started in 2018, in the final year of high school. Liam Evangelista built his first electric skateboard for about $500 — not including the speed controllers that blew up along the way.
The feeling was instant. Adrenaline on tap. A kind of freedom that's hard to explain to anyone who hasn't felt it. But the hardware couldn't keep up with the riding. Parts failed. Boards broke down before group rides. He got sick of showing up with a machine that might not make it home.
So he started building his own parts — beginning with a motor mount he designed, 3D-printed eight times, then cast in aluminium from a backyard coal foundry he built himself, melting down old pots and pans.

The Gamble
A CNC machine on the mortgage
That first aluminium motor mount survived a brutal accident — and became Liam's first product. He built a shed with his dad, then convinced him to put a Tormach CNC milling machine on the mortgage.
When COVID hit, his day job disappeared. But Radium orders went through the roof. When the workshop called asking if he could come back, he told them he was too busy making esk8 parts. He never went back.
In late 2019, Liam and Antony Richards decided to build an electric skateboard company. Their conviction: the entire industry was bolting motors onto longboard technology that was never designed for the demands of high-performance electric riding.
The Obsession
Build everything in-house
The first prototype used a carbon chassis with custom suspension — but bought-in motors, axles, belts, and mounts kept failing. That was unacceptable. So they made a decision that would define the company: build everything themselves.
No prior composites experience. No engineering degrees. No venture capital. Just a workshop, a CNC machine, and an obsessive refusal to ship something that wasn't right.
A year of carbon fibre mould failures followed — plugs that melted in the sun, layups that cracked, a CNC machine that seemed to laugh at their attempts. Eventually they produced a 1kg carbon deck and the first electric prototype: the XP1.

The Result
Four years became the Mach One
The steering was redesigned six times. They developed the first torque vectoring system ever put on an electric skateboard — now patented. Purpose-built motors. Polyurethane belts. Every component designed for this one machine.
In 2024, the Mach One won a Gold Good Design Award. One hundred individually numbered boards shipped to 17 countries. A Genesis Mach One #00 sold at Esk8Con Las Vegas for approximately $13,000 AUD — believed to be the most ever paid for a production electric skateboard.
One New York rider had a car roll straight over his Mach One. The board lifted the car as it passed. He rode it away without damage.
What Comes Next
Board number 100 shipped. The chapter closed.
The Mach One is sold out. Six years in the making, and every one of those numbered boards is now out in the world — ridden daily by people who trusted Radium before it had proven anything.
The next chapter is already being built. Same obsession. Same workshop. Same refusal to compromise.
