The E-Skate Glossary

Every scene has its own language. Whether you're a fresh-off-the-box first-timer or a garage builder elbow-deep in a VESC config, here's the lingo — the slang, the ride, and the tech — decoded.

The Scene

The culture and the slang you'll hear on a group ride.

Esk8 / e-skate

The whole sport and community — electric skateboarding. If someone says they "ride esk8," they mean this.

PEV

Personal Electric Vehicle. The umbrella term that covers e-skates, e-scooters, one-wheels and the rest of the family.

Stoke

The pure joy of riding. "High stoke" is that grin you can't wipe off after a perfect carve down an empty road.

Send it

To commit fully — a hill, a corner, a long-range run. No hesitation. The board can handle it; the question is whether you can.

Bombing

Riding down a steep hill at full noise. A rite of passage, and where good brakes earn their keep.

Carving

Linking smooth, flowing turns — surfing the pavement. The reason most people fall in love with riding in the first place.

Group ride / GR

The crew rolling out together. Part social club, part shakedown run, part excuse to show off the new build.

Kook

The rider who skips the helmet, blasts past pedestrians and gives the scene a bad name. Don't be the kook.

Thane lines

The marks urethane wheels leave when you really lean into a slide. A badge of honour on the right surface.

Range anxiety

That nagging worry you won't make it home on the battery you've got left. Cured by honest range numbers and a charger in the bag.

Sesh

A session — a ride out, solo or with the crew. "Going for a quick sesh."

Shred

To ride hard and ride well. "Let's go shred."

Steeze

Style with ease — looking effortless while you ride. You can't fake steeze.

Dialed

Perfectly set up and running sweet. A dialed board does exactly what you ask, every time.

Full send

To commit completely, no holding back. The bigger cousin of "send it."

Sketchy

A spot, a speed or a situation that feels dangerous or unpredictable. If it feels sketchy, it probably is — back off.

Bail

Stepping or jumping off to abandon ship before a crash. Knowing how to bail clean is a real skill — and it saves skin.

Slam

The crash you didn't bail in time to avoid. Gear up and a slam becomes a story, not a hospital trip.

The Ride

How a board feels, handles and behaves under your feet.

Deck

The board you stand on. Flex, length and shape decide whether it feels like a cruiser or a missile.

Concave

The curve moulded across the deck. It cups your feet so you stay locked in when things get fast or rough.

Trucks

The axle assemblies that hold the wheels and let the board turn as you lean. The heart of how a board carves.

Bushings

The rubber pieces inside the trucks. Swap their hardness to make the board turnier or more stable at speed.

Durometer

How hard a wheel or bushing is, written like "78A". Softer grips and absorbs; harder slides and rolls faster.

Griptape

The sandpaper-like surface on top of the deck that keeps your shoes planted.

Thane / urethane

Street wheels. Smooth, grippy and quiet on good tarmac. Trades the cushion of pneumatics for speed and roll.

All-terrain / AT

A setup built to leave the pavement — bigger wheels, more clearance, made for dirt, gravel and grass.

Speed wobbles

The high-speed shimmy that hits when the trucks aren't dialled or you tense up. Cured by tuning, not panic.

Wheelbite

When a wheel rubs the deck mid-turn and stops it dead. Bad news — fixed with risers, harder bushings or smaller wheels.

Cruise vs top speed

Cruise is the comfortable pace you'll actually ride all day; top speed is the headline number. Range is quoted at cruise for a reason.

Foot brake

Old-school stopping by dragging a foot. On a good electric board you'll rarely need it — but it's a handy backup.

Regular / goofy

Which foot leads. Left foot forward is "regular," right foot forward is "goofy." Neither's better — it's just how you stand.

Switch

Riding with your non-dominant foot forward. Awkward at first, genuinely useful once you've got it.

Push / kick-push

Kicking off the ground to get rolling — the old-school way, and how you set off before the throttle takes over.

Pump

Generating speed by working the board through carves, no pushing and no power. Pure flow, and a great way to feel a deck.

Powerslide

Breaking the wheels loose into a controlled sideways slide to scrub speed. The stylish way to slow down.

Tuck

Crouching low to cut wind drag at speed. The faster you go, the more those watts matter.

The Tech

What's actually moving you — drivetrain, power and brains.

ESC

Electronic Speed Controller — the brain between your remote and the motors. It turns a thumb input into precise power and braking.

VESC

The open-source ESC that builders love — created by Benjamin Vedder (hence the name). Endlessly configurable: motor limits, brake feel, throttle curve, all in your hands.

Belt drive

Power sent from the motor to the wheel by a toothed belt and pulleys. Strong torque, serviceable, with that classic esk8 whir.

Hub motor

A motor built right inside the wheel. Quiet and low-maintenance, but trades a little torque and wheel choice for simplicity.

Outrunner

The motor type used in belt drives, where the outer can spins. Big torque for its size — the workhorse of performance builds.

Kv

A motor's rpm per volt. Lower Kv means more torque and grunt; higher Kv chases top speed. A core number when spec'ing a build.

Torque vectoring

Sending the right amount of power to each wheel independently, so the board drives out of corners and over rough ground with control instead of slip.

AWD

All-wheel drive — every wheel driven, not just two. More grip, more torque, and the confidence to climb and launch without losing traction.

Regen braking

Regenerative braking — slowing down feeds energy back into the battery. Smoother stops, a touch more range, less wear.

Watt-hours / Wh

The honest measure of battery size and the best predictor of real range. Bigger Wh, further you go — terrain and weight permitting.

Voltage sag

The dip in battery voltage when you ask for hard acceleration or climb a hill. Less sag means power that holds when you need it.

BMS

Battery Management System — the guardian of the pack. Balances cells, blocks over-charge and over-drain, keeps the battery safe and long-lived.

FOC

Field Oriented Control — the smart, near-silent way a modern controller drives the motor. Smoother, more efficient, and strong on torque at low speed.

ERPM

Electronic RPM — how a controller reads motor speed. It's the real RPM multiplied by the motor's pole pairs, so the numbers look big.

Sensored / sensorless

Whether the motor has sensors telling the controller exactly where it is. Sensored gives smooth, strong starts from a standstill; sensorless is simpler and happy at speed. Hybrid uses both.

BLDC

Brushless DC — the motor type at the heart of every modern e-skate. No brushes to wear out, big power for its size.

Direct drive

Motors mounted inline with the wheels, no belt. Quieter and lower-maintenance than belts, with a planted feel — a middle ground between belt and hub.

Anti-spark

A switch that powers the board up without the nasty spark a big battery throws when you connect it. Saves your connectors and your nerves.

Connectors / XT60 · XT90

The plugs that carry battery current. Bigger numbers handle more amps — XT90 for high-power builds, XT60 for lighter ones.

Failsafe

What the board does if it loses the remote signal — a good one brakes smoothly rather than cutting out. Non-negotiable on a fast board.

The Build

For the garage tinkerers and scratch builders.

DIY / scratch build

Building a board from parts instead of buying complete — choosing your own motors, ESC, battery and drivetrain. Total control, real satisfaction.

Battery config / e.g. 12S4P

How cells are wired: "S" is cells in series (sets voltage/speed), "P" is parallel (sets capacity/range). 12S4P = 12 in series, 4 in parallel.

Cell format / 18650 · 21700

The standard lithium cell sizes packs are built from. 21700s are bigger, holding more energy per cell than the older 18650.

Motor mount

The bracket clamping the motor to the truck and holding belt alignment. Get it wrong and you'll chew belts; get it right and forget it's there.

Pulley & belt

The gearing of a belt drive. Pulley tooth counts set your gear ratio — torque for hills versus speed on the flat.

Cogging

The jerky, stuttery feel a motor can have at crawl speed. Smoothed out with the right motor, sensors and ESC tune.

Nm / torque

Newton-metres — twisting force. Torque is what launches you off the line and drags you up hills, separate from outright top speed.

Enclosure

The sealed housing under the deck protecting the battery and electronics from road spray and debris. The unsung hero of a reliable build.

Gear ratio

The ratio of motor-pulley to wheel-pulley teeth. Lower gearing trades top speed for torque and hill-climbing; higher gearing does the opposite.

Idler

A spare pulley that presses on the belt to keep it tight and wrapped around more teeth. More grip, less belt skip.

Threadlocker

The blue (or red) glue — Loctite — that stops bolts vibrating loose. Skip it and you'll be chasing rattles forever.

Spot welder / nickel strip

How packs are joined — thin nickel strip welded across the cells with a spot welder. You never solder directly to a cell.

Riser pads

Spacers between deck and trucks that lift the deck to clear bigger wheels and stop wheelbite.

Top-mount / drop-through

How the deck sits on the trucks. Top-mount rides higher and turnier; drop-through sits lower and more stable. Different feel, same idea.
